It is of great benefit to our club that we have many members who are willing and very capable of presenting talks. On 23rd July in Castlehill Hall, Chairman David Martin was pleased to welcome this meeting’s speaker, member Peter Speirs. Peter has been with the club for 14 years, and has served as both Chairman and Treasurer. The title of his talk is ‘Statues and Monuments in Scotland’.

Statues and Monuments in Scotland

Today our talk was given by Club member Peter Speirs whose life-long passion for motorbikes gave us the backdrop for his very interesting and educational talk.

As an introduction, he gave us a list of motorbikes he has owned or rebuilt, from the small BSA Bantam to the much larger and heavier Honda Pan European.

Peter has been an active member of the Scottish Motorcycle Club and has often participated in the Club’s annual Challenge. In the 60s, 70s and 80s the club challenge involved them in camping overnight in the Angus Glens. Previous challenges have included gin distilleries in 2023 and last year, it took the form of a Scottish wide search for monuments and statues at twenty-five different destinations.

It encourages members to visit places they might not go to normally on two wheels, take a photo of the monument showing their motorbike at the destination as proof of their successful visit. It requires a degree of organisation to take in as many destinations as possible in the one journey, without crossing the same road twice, in the minimum mileage. Of course it is a competition, though not a race, with a league table of members’ success relative to each other.

His talk moved on to describe the 2024 challenge, Statues and Monuments. Some, we knew of, like the Jim Clark statue at Kilmany and the Jimmy Shand one in Auchtermuchty.

The challenge took him all over Scotland where he introduced us to many monuments we did not know about and Peter told us their significance.

His highest day’s trip mileage was 470 miles in 11 driving hours.

Following questions from members, the vote of thanks was given by Bob Farmer.
