There was an excellent attendance at the Castlehill Community Hall on Wednesday 11th March to be welcomed by our Chairman, John Parker. Especially welcome was our speaker for the day, Richard Brickley OBE MBE. Richard's talk today is entitled 'Reflections on 50 years in Para Sports'. Rchard is a resident of Cupar.

It was pleasing that the recent poster campaign for new members brought positive results because a special welcome was given to two ladies who had reacted and joined the meeting today. We hope that they enjoy the talk and the company and return to the next meeting - with more potential members.

Reflections on 50 years in Para Sports

Cupar Probus was exteremely fortunate to have Richard Brickley OBE MBE talk to us about his experiences running Disability Sport Fife for over 30 years.  A “proud Glaswegian”, Richard became a Head of Department in 1977 at the Fife Sports Institute, having taught for 2 years at Dundee High School.  He inherited a wheelchair dance team and took them to the British Championship in London the next year; and his love affair with disabled sport began.  

Through a massive fund raising effort around Fife and beyond, Richard developed  the Fife disabled sport capability, purchasing their own bus in 1981 and, in 1984, attending the first Paralympics in New York with the British team.  The disabilities grouping expanded to include those with a Learning Disability, and the Fife team raised £100,000 from Fife alone to attend the special Learning Disability Olympics, making sure that his teams always looked the part; something that was much appreciated by the athletes.  Richard went on to describe participating in a range of competitions and Paralympics across the world, including Miami, Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, Athens, and Beijing in his last Paralympics in 2008, where he was Head Classifier.
For over 30 years, he dedicated himself to recruiting, coaching, organising and fund raising to allow young disabled people access to sport, and a better life, through the challenges and experiences of competition with their peers.  Largely through his efforts, Fife was always represented in the British teams, with Fife providing 27 Paralympians over the years.  And the Disability Sport Fife Hall of Fame boasts 16 Paralympians who have won Gold or Silver medals at the games; a truly remarkable achievement that has been recognised by the Honours awarded.  A riveting presentation from someone who has truly made a difference.
