On Wednesday 25th March, in Castlehill Community Hall, Chairman John Parker welcomed and introduced our speaker for the day, Roddy Gauld. Now retired, Roddy has been painting for all of his senior school and all of his working life at DC Thomson, and has continued into retirement. He is a resident of Cupar and a member of Cupar Art Club. Roddy's talk is entitled 'Artwork'.

Artwork

Roddy Gauld attended Bell Baxter School Cupar where he was delighted to learn they had an excellent Art Department led by enthusiastic Art teachers. He achieved Higher Art, among other highers, which gave him an interview and a job as a graphic artist with DC Thomson. He started with the comics section including the artwork for Battle of Britain, War Picture Libraries and other compendium books of that ilk. He also worked on the graphic artwork for ladies' magazines such as Annabelle, Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Elle and others, as well as Sports publications. As well as the Peoples Friend, in all, he worked on 30 different magazines . 

On retiral, he continued to paint, starting at first on coastal scenes which either were en-plein air having all his painting kit with him when it was a nice day or he took many photos of the scene and worked on it at home in his study. The mediums he used were acrylic, watercolour and oils. He took the occasional commission but found that they were time restrictive whereas he preferred to travel to a coastal or mountainous area where the muse would take him and he would paint or photograph for work in his study. When he was working in his study, he would always have music playing an eclectic collection from Rod Stewart to Classical Music from his collection of CD’s. 

He'd brought along a slide collection of his paintings to show and, in the writer’s opinion, his outstanding works were those of coastal scenes - his mastery of storm waves was excellent. He finished by saying that he'd painted over 50 years, from Bell Baxter to present, and still got great pleasure in creating paintings which pleased people.
