There was an excellent turn-out for the meeting held in Castlehill Hall on 8th July – Chairman John Parker presided and he welcomed the attendance of two new potential members.
Longtime member, Bob Farmer, announced the death of a former member Ian McKenzie. Ian joined the club in 2005 and remained a member continuously over the years but, due to ill health, had to give up a couple of years ago. His funeral will be in St John’s church at 2.00pm on Monday 13th July. Donations to the British Heart Foundation will be welcomed after the service.
Our Chairman introduced the speaker, Kevin Thompson. Kevin’s talk is entitled ‘Prostate Cancer’ – a very suitable subject. He represents the partnership of Grand Lodge of Scotland and Prostate Scotland.

Prostate Cancer
Kevin Thompson, a Prostate Cancer Champion working with the charity “Prostate Scotland”, gave an extremely interesting and informative presentation to Cupar Probus Club. His opening comment that, “men are bad at talking about themselves”, explained, in few words, why Prostate Cancer awareness is so important. He summarised what could go wrong with the Prostate - from benign swelling to life threatening cancer, and the symptoms that go with it. The classic signs of increasing age in men, included all the difficulties associated with urination, could indicate the early signs of Prostate Cancer and emphasised how important it is to catch the disease as early as possible. One in two men are affected by these symptoms.
Risk factors included age, family history and racial origin, and treatments ranged from simple “active surveillance” to major surgery. and chemotherapy. There is no national screening programme for Prostate Cancer, and this is a controversial issue. The PSA blood test can be requested from your GP, but the test is not wholly reliable, with false positives and negatives not uncommon. Members, however, were encouraged to ask for the test, and to spread the word as widely as possible to friends and family. Kevin described the support available from Prostate Scotland, via its App, the COMPASS support programme in conjunction with Maggie’s, with courses available at many locations across Scotland.
The Cupar Probus audience, who are all of a certain age, were acutely focussed on all that Kevin had to say, and a wide-ranging discussion followed the presentation. It was stimulating and thought-provoking, and much appreciated. It might even have saved lives!
