On 28th October, in Castlehill Community Hall, our Chairman, John Parker, was delighted to welcome club member, Charles Bradbury, as today’s speaker. Charles was born in Argentina, lives in Cupar, having retired from running his own chemical and electronic business in Cupar and St Andrews. He achieved a Doctorate after retiral. He was an ex-tennis champion in Spain, now enjoys golf, and is talking today about his hobby of book publishing.

Publishing as a hobby

Our talk today was given by club member Charles Bradbury. He was brought up in Buenos Aires and by his own admission was not a reader, preferring Dan Dare and The Eagle and an American encyclopaedia for children. He did not imagine that 75 years later, he would end up creating books like that treasured one.

He started out as a chemical engineer in research which gives us a clue as to the type of publishing he later enjoyed along with his friend Henry Steuart Fotheringham.

He left University work to apply his skills to researching his Bradbury family ancestry and other unrelated Bradburys of note. He explained the origins of the family name from an old Saxon word meaning wooden fortification. DNA tests show he is from Viking stock in Orkney and via Dublin to Scotland and south to the village of Bradbury.

His next search was the origins of Charles’ second name , Kinder. He is an 11th generation descendant of Peter Bradbury born 1639 in Saddleworth where the Kinder stones are located.

Charles has discovered notable relatives one of whom was awarded  the VC for bravery in WW1. So many other Bradbury individuals and organisations have been turned up by Charles, he felt he could write a high-quality hard-backed illustrated book and the Bradbury Heritage was born. He built his books around the images he obtained and the permission to use them sometimes required payment or just a copy of the book. He and Steuart formed a company called Braykc Publishing.

The font used is one more easily read by dyslexics and the paper is of the highest quality.

Publications also issued cover biographies, Chronicles of Families and Clans, Genealogies, Heraldry and many others.

This was a wide ranging but most interesting talk.

Following questions from members, the vote of thanks was given by member Colin Moore.
